The Master cordially invites you to join her on a visit to the College of Arms in Queen Victoria Street EC4V 4BT on Thursday 23rd September 2010.

The College has a long history going back to medieval times when the Heralds organised jousting tournaments. They acquired expert knowledge of Coats of Arms and eventually became responsible for controlling them. This led them into genealogy as the social use of heraldry developed. The Heralds are now supervised by the Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk.

In 1484 they were granted a charter of incorporation by Richard III and given premises in which to hold their records. The present College building dates from the 1670s; the previous one was destroyed in the Great Fire in 1666.

The visit will commence at 6.15pm at the College and will feature a tour with expert commentary from one of the Heralds and a significant part of the visit will be spent in the Records Room where we will see a selection of records dating back to 1484. We will even see our own Royal Charter! The tour will end at about 8.30 and will be followed by a hot buffet supper with wine in the College. We will need to leave at about 9.45/10pm.

The number attending is strictly limited to 20 so the visit is only open to Constructors and their partners.
The cost is £38 per person including the supper and wine. Dress is smart casual or business wear. Please send your applications and cheques to Graeme Monteith, 3 Eastwood Avenue, Giffnock, Glasgow G46 6LS. Cheques should be made out to The Worshipful Company of Constructors. It will be a case of "first come, first served".
