MINCING LANE, LONDON EC3R 7AH

WEDNESDAY 10TH FEBRUARY 2010.

The Clothworkers’ are the 12th Company in seniority and so the last of the Great Twelve. Much of the wealth of medieval England came from wool and cloth, so a good number of the ancient livery companies owe their existence to aspects of the textile trades. The Company received a Royal Charter from Henry VIII in 1528, but goes back even earlier through its two predecessor companies, the Fullers (1480) and the Shearmen (1508). It was the latter’s precedence which the Clothworkers inherited that secured them 12th place, a situation the Dyers believed should have been theirs. The Company’s first Ordinances were signed in 1532 by Sir Thomas More amongst others.

Clothworkers’ Hall is the sixth on the same site, and the land on which it stands has been in the possession of the Company since 1456, when it was acquired by a group of Shearmen. The fifth hall was completely demolished by enemy action in 1941; the foundation stone of the present hall was laid by Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, in 1956. It has a metal frame and is clad with Portland stone and brick. In 1985/86 the interiors were refurbished by Donald Insall and Associates.

The Livery and Awards Dinner is very much focused on the Construction Industry. We invite the Masters of other industry companies, the leaders of several industry institutions, and, as private guests, friends, colleagues and clients from within the industry. It is the custom that spouses are not invited unless they are themselves connected to construction. A number of Company prizes are awarded and several of our Scholars will be present.
