Scholarships and Awards
The Company supports six scholarship programmes with a total of up to eight scholars appointed annually. All attract a bursary of £2000. The scholars carry out their research whilst continuing with their normal employment. Research topics are selected that are of mutual interest to the scholar, their employer, and the scholarship sponsors.
The research period of twelve months culminates with the submission of a dissertation, and a presentation to an invited audience of industry professionals.
The Sir Ian Dixon Scholarship was established in 1998 in conjunction with the CIOB and named in honour of the late Sir Ian Dixon and is generously funded by Lady Dixon. The scholarship supports research in the general field of construction management and there are now fouteen past and two current scholars. The last scholars presenting in 2009 were Benjamin Potts BSc (Hons) ICIOB (Killby & Gayford Ltd) and Edward Basterfield (Costain Group) Those presenting in 2008 were Daphne Denjis (Robert McAlpine) and Gemma Jones (Laing O’Rourke). in 2007 the scholars were Andrew Anderson and Tom Merry.
The FAS Scholarship is underway
The Sustainability Scholarship is jointly funded with the Happold Trust, and the CIOB, and now supports two scholars annually for research into the broad field of sustainable construction. The current scholar is James Anwyl [Chi Energy].
The University Research Scholarship is jointly funded by the Worshipful Company of Constructors and the CIOB and, to date has been run in collaboration with the University of Reading. One award is made annually in the field of construction management to a masters degree student. The current student is Ekta Rampersad
The WCoC/ICE QUEST Scholarship is jointly funded by the Worshipful Company of Constructors and the QUEST programme of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Grant Mobbs of Laing O’Rourke researched the first pilot scholarship which was run successfully in 2006.
Two new scholarship programmes in the field of surveying have been established this year. The WCoC/RICS Scholarship is funded jointly with RICS, and will support one scholar annually. The WCoC/CEM Scholarship is jointly funded with the College of Estate Management, and will support one scholar a year.
2008
The David Tong Cup 2007 recipient was Edward Poynton. The Constructors’ Prize 2007 recipient was Miss Tang Hsu Jing. The 2007 Building Crafts College winners were Christopher Jones and Peter Surrey, both 3rd Year Bench Joinery students. The Winner of the Shafting and Shoring Cup was Sgt Vincent Simpson RE(V), 101 Regiment Royal Engineers (EOD)(V).
2009
The David Tong Cup 2008 recipient was Mr Anil Singh Rana . The Constructors’ Prize 2008 recipient was Mr Ricky Hunt . The 2008 Building Crafts College winners were XXX. The College of Estate Management Award 2008 to Mr Christopher Castle The Winner of the Shafting and Shoring Cup was Sergeant Nick Connell RE(V), 101 Regiment Royal Engineers (EOD)(V).
